Joana Vasconcelos

Born in 1971, Joana Vasconcelos is a Portuguese visual artist whose practice spans more than three decades and encompasses a wide range of media. Widely recognised for her monumental sculptures and immersive installations, she appropriates and transforms everyday objects, reactivating the arts and crafts tradition within a contemporary framework. Her work establishes a critical dialogue between the private and the public, popular culture and erudite references, addressing questions of gender, consumer society and collective identity with both conceptual rigour and an underlying sense of humour.

Vasconcelos gained international recognition in 2005 with The Bride at the first Venice Biennale curated by women, an event to which she has since returned on three occasions. In 2013 she represented Portugal with Trafaria Praia, the first floating pavilion in the history of the Biennale. She was also the first woman and the youngest artist to present a solo exhibition at the Palace of Versailles; her 2012 exhibition became the most visited in France in over 50 years, attracting a record 1.6 million visitors. In 2018 she was the first Portuguese artist to hold an individual exhibition at Guggenheim Bilbao, which became the third most visited in the museum’s history. In 2023 she was invited to exhibit at the Uffizi Galleries and the Pitti Palace in Florence, placing her work in direct dialogue with the Western canon, from Leonardo da Vinci to Michelangelo and Caravaggio.

In recent years, Vasconcelos’ exhibitions have continued to demonstrate a rare ability to combine critical ambition with broad public engagement. Extravagâncias at the Museu Oscar Niemeyer significantly increased the museum’s attendance [41%], while Le Château des Valkyries became the most visited exhibition at Gottorf Castle in the past 25 years. That same year, Transcending the Domestic inaugurated the Malta International Contemporary Arts Space, marking the opening of Malta’s first museum dedicated to contemporary art. In 2025, Flamboyant at the Palácio de Liria in Madrid unfolded across the palace’s historic interiors and gardens, articulating a dialogue between Vasconcelos’ work and one of Europe’s most important private historical-art collections.

Her work has been shown extensively in major institutions worldwide, including the Grassi Palace, the Thyssen- Bornemisza Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts, Manchester Art Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Kunsthal Rotterdam, São Paulo’s CCBB and Pinacoteca, Istanbul Modern, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow, Le Centquatre and Monnaie de Paris, MAAT, the Palais de Tokyo, Serralves, and the Hermitage.

Vasconcelos’ works are held in prominent public and private collections, among them Centre Pompidou, Tia, Ömer Koç, Berardo, The Rothschild Foundation, Calouste Gulbenkian, Culturgest, François Pinault and Louis Vuitton. The Artist was awarded the rank of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique by the Portuguese Republic in 2009 and appointed Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture in 2022. She has directed the Joana Vasconcelos Studio since 2006 and founded the Joana Vasconcelos Foundation in 2012, supporting social initiatives, awarding scholarships and promoting access to art.
